Clariant Unveils Solution to Enhance Feed Quality
Clariant has introduced its latest solution against dangerous mycotoxins produced by mould fungi found in approximately 25% of global feed production. FIXAT™ Optimum, launched at the nutriFORUM Conference in Spain, can protect animals against all dangerous toxins, including highly toxic aflatoxins.
Mycotoxins are created by mould fungi that develop in feed harvested and stored under poor conditions. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of droughts, floods and other natural disasters, further worsening current conditions. The presence of mycotoxins in feed leads to significant declines in animal performance parameters such as weight gain and feed conversion efficiency.
It also causes organ damage or reproductive problems, resulting in significant income losses in livestock production. Moreover, mycotoxins are carried into meat, eggs and dairy products, creating unwanted human exposure.
FIXAT™ Optimum is an adsorbent composed of bentonite, a valuable clay mineral with specific swelling properties and strong binding capacity. Mycotoxin adsorbents and binders significantly reduce mycotoxins in animal feed by fixing them to their surfaces. FIXAT™ Optimum interacts electrostatically with the polar groups of the mycotoxin molecule.
Guido Appl, Head of EMEA Purification and Feed Business Unit at Clariant, commented: "We conducted tests in the laboratory by completely replicating absorption and desorption conditions to measure our product's performance. This new solution binds mycotoxins in the animal gastrointestinal tract. Even under harsh conditions, the toxin remains tightly bound and can be eliminated without causing harm."
