BASF Starts Up New NPG Plant at Zhanjiang Verbund Site
BASF has opened a new NPG plant at its Zhanjiang Verbund site and launched NEOL® NPG, a product with a reduced carbon footprint.

Zhanjiang, China – BASF's Intermediates division has opened a new neopentyl glycol (NPG) facility at the Verbund site in Zhanjiang, China. Following the commissioning of the new facility with an annual production capacity of 80,000 metric tonnes, BASF's global NPG capacity is increasing from 255,000 to 335,000 metric tonnes per year, strengthening its position as one of the world's leading NPG producers. NPG is an intermediate product primarily used in the production of powder coating resins. First customer deliveries were made in October.
Meanwhile, BASF has launched NPG with reduced product carbon footprint (rPCF) for NPG produced at the Zhanjiang Verbund facility, namely NEOL® Neopentylglycol solution 90% rPCF AP. Preliminary assessments show that the PCF of NPG produced in Zhanjiang is lower than the PCF of the same product manufactured at BASF's existing NPG facilities in Asia, due to the site's highly efficient production technologies, Verbund integration benefits, and the use of chemical raw materials with lower carbon footprints and 100% renewable electricity.

Powder coatings are widely used in various industries including construction materials, general industry, home appliances, furniture, automobiles and 3C products. Due to their low volatile organic compounds (VOC) content, powder coatings enable users to comply with VOC emission standards by reducing VOC emissions by up to 50% compared to liquid coatings. Other applications of NPG include lubricants, plasticizers and the production of pharmaceuticals such as ibuprofen.
