Waste Is Being Turned Into Education
The "Atma Bağışla" ("Don't Throw It, Donate It") Project, run by the Türkiye Eğitim Gönüllüleri Vakfı (TEGV) since 2017, continues to turn electronic waste into both environmental and social benefit. To date, 725 tons of electronic waste have been recycled under the project, and the resulting proceeds have provided quality education support to more than 6,460 children.

Every 5 June World Environment Day stands out as an important awareness day for drawing attention to environmental problems and strengthening sustainable living habits. Climate crisis, depletion of natural resources and increasing waste volumes demonstrate once again that environmental responsibility should not be limited to certain days. TEGV, through the Donate Waste Project, transforms unused electronic items into a system that creates value for the economy and education.
Electronic waste transforms from environmental risk to social benefit
As the lifespan of technological devices shortens, the amount of electronic waste increases every year. E-waste that is not properly recycled creates serious environmental risks to soil, water and air due to the heavy metals it contains. However, when properly managed, this waste both contributes to the protection of natural resources and creates social benefit.
In this context, TEGV implements the project in cooperation with TÜBİSAD, which operates as an organization authorised by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change of the Republic of Turkey. The project ensures that unused electronic devices in homes, schools and workplaces are recovered in an environmentally sensitive manner at licensed recycling facilities.
More than 6,000 individual and over 700 corporate supporters
To date, more than 6,000 individual and over 700 corporate donors have supported the "Donate Waste" project. The revenue generated from the 725 tonnes of e-waste collected has provided resources for education programmes offered by TEGV to children across Turkey.
The project demonstrates that waste is not merely something to be disposed of; when properly managed, it can transform into a value that both protects the environment and contributes to children's education.
