Turkey's pharmaceutical exports grew 19 percent in the January-October period of 2020 compared to the same period of the previous year, breaking a record for a 10-month period. Ralph Hemmerling, Business Development and Special Projects Director at Fevzi Gandur Logistics, which carries pharmaceuticals to many points around the world, emphasized that this record represents an important step towards Turkey's goal of becoming one of the world's top 10 economies in the healthcare sector. Turkey, which exports pharmaceuticals to 154 countries across six continents, is increasing its strength in this field. Pharmaceutical exports in the January-October period showed a 19 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year. Ralph Hemmerling, Business Development and Special Projects Director at Fevzi Gandur Logistics, a specialist in international pharmaceutical logistics, evaluated TURKSTAT data and rising pharmaceutical exports.

"Turkey ranks 14th globally in the pharmaceutical and medical market"

Hemmerling shared the information: "Turkey's exports in the 'pharmaceuticals' category in the January-October period reached USD 861.5 million and set a record for a 10-month period. Pharmaceutical imports declined by 8.2 percent, falling to USD 2.061 billion." Noting that Turkey ranks 14th globally in the pharmaceutical and medical market, Hemmerling recalled that the 2023 target is to reach the top 10.

Pharmaceutical logistics demands precision, or it causes harm

Hemmerling stated that pharmaceutical logistics is one of the company's areas of expertise and that the transportation and storage of pharmaceuticals is handled differently from the logistics of all other products. Hemmerling emphasized that pharmaceuticals transported without proper conditions cannot be detected as degraded from an external inspection, but the damage becomes apparent when patients use them. Pointing out that defective pharmaceuticals can cause serious health problems in patients, Hemmerling said: "This demonstrates how critical pharmaceutical logistics is. Selecting the right logistics partner will also make it easier for pharmaceutical manufacturers to fulfill their responsibility for human health."

From factory to pharmacy to hospital requires careful attention

Ralph Hemmerling added that pharmaceuticals must be protected against many factors such as moisture, temperature, light and vibration, and that these sensitive operations are maintained carefully from production through distribution points, pharmacies and hospitals.
