Mining Sector Overview

Mining sector exports, accounting for 3% of the country's total exports of USD 156.7 billion in 2017, reached USD 4.68 billion with a 23.8% increase compared to the previous year.

Turkey Exporters Assembly (TİM) When mining sector exports in 2017 are examined on a monthly basis, the picture is as follows.

Among the mining product groups with the highest exports in 2017, natural stone ranked first with 7.9 million tonnes and USD 2 billion, followed by metallic ores with 5 million tonnes and USD 1.4 billion, industrial minerals with 11.4 million tonnes and USD 874 million, ferro alloys with 261,000 tonnes and USD 365 million, mineral fuels and other products.
During this period, block marble-travertine with 5.6 million tonnes and USD 1.1 billion was the most exported product in our total mining exports in 2017, while processed marble with 1.5 million tonnes and USD 684.6 million ranked second,
zinc ore with 762,000 tonnes and USD 390.4 million ranked third, chromium ore with 1.38 million tonnes and USD 344.3 million ranked fourth, and natural borates and concentrates with USD 265.5 million ranked fifth. Other Asian countries, including the People's Republic of China, India, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, ranked first among country groups with the highest mining exports in 2017 with USD 2.11 billion, with a 25.7% increase in the value of exports to these countries compared to the same period in 2016. European Union countries ranked second with USD 1.21 billion (39.05% increase), North American countries third with USD 477.9 million (11.24% increase), Near Middle East Asia fourth with USD 421.4 million (0.5% decrease), and other European countries fifth with USD 136.9 million (13.4% increase). Among the important countries where mining exports took place in 2017, the People's Republic of China (PRC) ranked first with USD 1.70 billion, with a 23.03% increase in exports to this country compared to the same period of the previous year. China was followed by the USA with USD 437.4 million (12.47% increase), Belgium with USD 227.7 million (75.04% increase), Italy with USD 164.9 million (20.09% increase) and Spain with USD 149.7 million (65.10% increase).

Our Natural Stone Exports

In 2017, our natural stone exports increased by 21.78% in volume and 13.43% in value compared to 2016, reaching USD 2.0 billion equivalent to 7.9 million tonnes. The chart below shows our natural stone exports over the last 10 years.

Block natural stone products, which constitute a large portion of global natural stone trade potential, accounted for approximately 54.3% of our natural stone exports in 2017, while processed products accounted for 46.6%.

During the period in question, the People's Republic of China led the countries to which natural stone exports were made with USD 945 million. Exports to this country recorded a 29.63% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. China was followed by the USA with USD 294 million, Saudi Arabia with USD 104 million, India with USD 84 million and Iraq with USD 63 million.
