Chemistry Sector Leads Izmir's Exports The Aegean Region's exports increased by 11% in 2022 to USD 31 billion 417 million. According to TÜİK data, Izmir, Turkey's second-largest exporting province, achieved 16% growth and accounted for 54% of the Aegean Region's exports with USD 17 billion 244 million in exports. The Aegean Free Zone and Izmir Free Zone contributed USD 3 billion 28 million to Izmir's exports. In 2022, Manisa achieved USD 5.1 billion in exports, while Denizli ranked third with USD 4.5 billion in exports, up 2%.

Balıkesir fell short of USD 1 billion

Aydın and Muğla surpassed the USD 1 billion threshold in 2022, setting new records. Aydın contributed USD 1.1 billion with 16% growth, Muğla USD 1 billion with 27% growth, Balıkesir USD 934 million with 17% growth, Kütahya USD 460 million with 18% growth, Uşak USD 426 million with 15% growth, and Afyonkarahisar USD 401 million with 5% growth to the Aegean Region's exports. In 2022, Muğla was the Aegean Region's export growth champion with a 27% jump. The Aegean Exporters Associations signed exports of USD 18 billion 297 million in 2022 with 12% growth. The Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Sector reached USD 2.56 billion, and the Chemistry sector surpassed the USD 2 billion threshold with USD 2 billion 81 million. The Aquatic Products and Animal Products Sector reached USD 1.62 billion, the Fresh Fruits, Vegetables and Products Sector USD 1.25 billion, the Mining Sector USD 1.2 billion, the Automotive Subsectors USD 1 billion 17 million, and the Cereals, Legumes, Oilseeds and Products Sector USD 1 billion 1 million, surpassing the USD 1 billion threshold.
USD 5.7 billion in exports from sectors without Exporters Associations at EİB in 2022
Looking at other sectors without Exporters Associations at EİB; Aegean chemists not represented under the Aegean Exporters Associations umbrella completed 2022 with USD 2 billion 81 million in exports, up 13%. Motor vehicles and subsectors grew 20% to USD 1 billion, the electrical and electronics sector reached USD 710 million, machinery and components USD 512 million, air conditioning industry USD 651 million, cement, glass, ceramics and clay products USD 368 million, ships and yachts grew 40% to USD 49 million, defense and aerospace industry surged 239% to USD 311 million, carpets sector USD 60 million, hazelnuts and products sector USD 24 million, ornamental plants and products grew 84% to USD 6 million, and precious metals and jewellery surged 144% to USD 1.8 million in exports. Sectors without Exporters Associations at EİB achieved USD 5.7 billion in exports in 2022.
Aegean Region exports from European countries to the Far East
Germany ranked first for Izmir and Manisa's exports, the United Kingdom for Denizli, Spain for Aydın, Russia for Muğla, Iraq for Balıkesir, Italy for Kütahya, China for Uşak, and the United States for Afyonkarahisar. The Chemistry sector was Izmir's leading export sector with USD 2 billion 473 million in exports, up 14%, while ready-made clothing and apparel contributed USD 1 billion 447 million to Izmir's exports. Izmir's steel exporters achieved USD 1 billion 177 million in exports, up 20%, automotive subsectors USD 922 million with 22% growth, and the electrical-electronics sector USD 801 million with 48% growth. The Electrical-Electronics sector was Manisa's leading sector with USD 2 billion 258 million, while ready-made clothing and apparel provided the largest contribution to Denizli's exports with USD 1 billion 329 million.
Muğla surpassed USD 1 billion threshold for the first time in its history
In 2022, the mining sector in Aydın ranked first with USD 232 million in exports. Muğla surpassed the USD 1 billion threshold for the first time in its history in 2022. The aquatic products and animal products sector captured the lion's share of Muğla's exports with USD 673 million, up 27%. The aquatic products and animal products sector contributed the most to Balıkesir's exports with USD 206 million. Kütahya's ceramic exporters achieved USD 264 million in export performance. The aquatic products and animal products sector ranked first in Uşak's exports with USD 121 million, surging 66%, while the textile sector also achieved USD 97 million in exports. The mining sector led Afyonkarahisar's exports with USD 234 million.
Industrial exports exceeded USD 10 billion, agricultural exports approaching USD 7 billion
Jak Eskinazi, Coordinator President of the Aegean Exporters Associations, stated: "In 2022, 9 out of 12 Exporters Associations under EİB increased their exports. Our industrial sectors contributed USD 10 billion 359 million to EİB's exports with 8% growth, while our agricultural sectors contributed USD 6 billion 727 million with 17% growth, and our mining sector's exports rose 11% to USD 1 billion 207 million. The ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector surpassed USD 2 billion. The chemistry sector, another sector surpassing USD 2 billion, once again demonstrated through export figures that it should be represented within EİB. Six of our sectors surpassed USD 1 billion." Highlighting that two Free Zones positioned Izmir as Turkey's second-largest exporting province, Eskinazi stated: "Our region's exports in 2022 increased 11% to USD 31 billion 417 million. The top three provinces contributing most to these exports were Izmir, Manisa, and Denizli. Five of our provinces surpassed the USD 1 billion threshold. In 2023, we expect Balıkesir to also join this achievement. Currently, 13 provinces in Turkey are exporting over USD 3 billion. Our two Free Zones, with USD 3 billion 28 million in exports, have surpassed 68 provinces. In 2022, we gained two additional free zones with Menemen and Bergama. With 4 free zones, we will further strengthen our position as Turkey's most exporting region." he said.
