Significant Investment from Stellantis
Stellantis and Lyten announced they will develop applications with advanced lithium-sulfur based electric vehicle batteries for vehicle weight reduction and enhanced vehicle sensing solutions.
According to a joint statement from the companies, Stellantis' investment in Lyten will enable the company to achieve significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate its transition to sustainable mobility.
Lithium-sulfur batteries have the potential to provide more than twice the energy density of lithium-ion and serve as an alternative to nickel-manganese-cobalt cathode solutions. Stellantis continues to research all battery technologies to meet the diverse needs of its customers and provide clean, safe and affordable mobility.
Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, Lyten's lithium-sulfur batteries contain no nickel, cobalt or manganese. This represents a path to achieving an estimated 60% lower carbon footprint than its best batteries and reaching the lowest-emission electric vehicle battery in the global market.
Conventional lithium-ion battery materials may prove insufficient for electric vehicle production. Lyten's lithium-sulfur battery will provide a nickel-manganese-cobalt-free cathode solution that supports the global transition to electric vehicles at mass market scale.
Lyten aims to supply customers with safe, high-performance and environmentally sustainable products while enabling automakers to benefit from US and European incentives provided for in the Inflation Reduction Act.
Beyond manufacturing electric vehicle batteries, Lyten is working with customers to begin offering lithium-sulfur batteries and 3D Graphene composites for specialty markets in 2023.

'Will reduce vehicle weight'
In comments featured in the statement, Lyten Chief Executive Officer Dan Cook said it is gratifying to see Stellantis Ventures' belief in the company's decarbonization materials, continuing his remarks as follows: 'Lyten 3D Graphene, a lithium-sulfur battery has the potential to provide more than twice the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, along with advantages such as weight reduction that improves load capacity and new sensing modes that require no chip, battery or cable. We are committed to accelerating momentum with Stellantis and the automotive market through these applications. Unlike two-dimensional forms of graphene, our tunable Lyten 3D Graphene production has been independently verified as carbon-neutral at scale. We are converting greenhouse gases into a new class of high-performance, high-value carbon materials and incorporating these engineered materials into applications that will decarbonize the sectors most difficult to reduce emissions from on the planet.' Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, recalling that they visited Lyten recently, said: 'We were very impressed by the potential of this technology to provide clean, safe and affordable mobility. Lyten's materials platform is an important investment for Stellantis Ventures aimed at accelerating the deployment of innovative, customer-focused technologies in line with our Dare Forward 2030 targets. Lyten's lithium-sulfur battery has the potential to be a key component in enabling the adoption of electric vehicles in the global market.
