Solvay has expanded its diversified high-performance polyphthalamide (PPA) compound portfolio with Amodel® Bios, a new family of partially bio-based long-chain PPA products specifically indicated for demanding electrical and electronic applications in e-mobility. In addition to renewable raw material content from non-food competing sources, production with 100% renewable electricity reduces global warming potential (GWP) to well below other bio-based PPA levels.

Supported by a long track record of pioneering PPA innovations, Solvay's Amodel® Bios PPA product combines this exceptional sustainability with outstanding performance properties for components in e-motors, power electronics and other high-quality electrical systems.

Most notably, it offers the highest glass transition temperature (Tg 135°C) among all bio-based PPAs on the market and a melting point (Tm) of 315°C. Designed for injection molding, it is an ideal candidate for bubble-free reflow soldered surface mount devices (SMD) and components in power electronics cooling circuits, including fluid connectors.

Additionally, the new polymer's limited moisture absorption compared to standard PPA results in high levels of dimensional stability with low voltage corrosion risk, particularly important for miniaturized electrical connectors. Amodel® Bios PPA also provides superior impact resistance even in halogen-free flame-retardant grades compliant with UL94 V0 and is highly suitable for colorable applications. This is complemented by high elongation, weld-line strength and excellent surface aesthetics.

Brian Baleno, Marketing Manager Transportation at Solvay Speciality Polymers, says: "As we continue to drive PPA innovation to meet higher performance requirements in e-mobility, the introduction of Amodel® Bios PPA also demonstrates Solvay's commitment to helping customers achieve their ambitious sustainability targets aligned with our One Planet message."

Furthermore, Solvay has taken one step further in ensuring the sustainability of the new PPA family with the support of Verisk Maplecroft to evaluate the material's sustainable sourcing characteristics. The consulting firm's Commodity Risk Service completed an internal supply chain risk assessment process aimed at identifying and managing risks associated with numerous environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues.

Amodel® Bios PPA has been launched globally and is initially available in four differentiated grades with feature profiles specifically tailored for structural, electrification and flame-retardant applications.

Amodel® is a registered trademark of Solvay.
