Sabinsa Curcumin C3 Reduct Receives EFSA Approval
Sabinsa Head of European Operations Dr. Umar Jan commented on the properties of the Curcumin C3 Reduct product
and the Novel Foods approval received from EFSA for this product.
Dr. Umar Jan stated, "It is true that broader recognition of the health benefits of curcumin and turmeric spice from which it is derived has led to significant growth in the supply of this ingredient. However, as brand owners and consumers are now more conscious than ever about bioavailability, our Curcumin C3 Reduct product stands out.
Ours is the only concentrated and advanced formulation type in which curcuminoids are already converted to Tetrahydrocurcuminoids (THCs). This product contains the pharmacologically active metabolites of curcuminoids.
It can act instantly within cells and deliver measurable health benefits. The fact that THCs are colorless or white, unlike brightly colored curcumin, also provides an advantage for formulators," he said.
Dr. Umar Jan continued his remarks, "Since we are in the product formulation space, there are other ways in which THCs offer greater versatility than alternative curcumin products. For example, THCs have demonstrated greater stability across a wide pH range than curcumin itself, demethoxycurcumin, or bisdemethoxycurcumin - all important constituents of turmeric.
Additionally, THCs are the pharmacologically active metabolites of curcuminoids, and most of the health benefits of curcuminoids are attributed to the presence of these reduced metabolites - in this case, in the C3 Reduct form.
Specifically, C3 Reduct has been shown in various studies to perform better on pharmacological activity than curcumin. Other curcumin metabolites such as turmeric glucuronide and curcumin sulfate are biologically inactive," he continued.
Novel Foods Approval from EFSA
Sabinsa Head of European Operations Dr. Umar Jan also provided information about the approval received from EFSA (The European Food Safety Authority). Dr. Umar Jan stated, "The approval confirms that our product meets all safety requirements. It has been approved for use as a food supplement for adults with a daily dosage upper limit of 140 mg. Receiving Novel Foods approval from EFSA is certainly due to the solid science behind C3 Reduct. In terms of results, targeted research has shown that C3 Reduct may support the health of organs such as the liver, lungs, intestines, and even the brain. To select some examples addressing intestinal health, our curcuminoids have been shown to reduce inflammatory responses and maintain general colon health, thereby reducing the formation of colon polyps. The anti-inflammatory benefits were further understood from studies conducted in the area of liver health. These show that C3 Reduct has a protective effect against oxidative stress and damage that may occur in this organ. When it comes to the brain, Sabinsa's tetrahydrocurcuminoids' antioxidant and anti-inflammatory function has been validated in relation to decreases in glutathione that help reduce neurodegeneration, respectively. According to unpublished research, our product has a clearly beneficial effect in helping to ease fibrosis by reducing the incidence of important inflammatory markers for the lungs," he said. Dr. Umar Jan concluded his remarks, "Among other interesting results are findings from trials showing that C3 Reduct can reduce blood sugar; these findings suggest that Sabinsa's product plays a beneficial role in managing healthy sugar levels. Finally, we should mention the benefits of our curcuminoids in sports nutrition. Once again, what is highly promising is the well-documented anti-inflammatory properties of the ingredient. Curcumin C3 Reduct has been shown to activate 250 times the amount of Adenosine Monophosphate Protein Kinase (AMPK). Meanwhile, AMPK is the central regulator of energy homeostasis, balancing nutrient supply with energy demand and stimulating ATP production under energy-depleted conditions. By activating AMPK, C3 Reduct helps reduce excess glucose and fats by burning them for energy. As a result, Sabinsa's C3 Reduct product offers a wide range of opportunities for formulators and NPD professionals," he concluded.Advertisement
