Michelman Launches Compostable Coating Solutions

Michelman announces certifications for three high-performance compostable coatings for converters seeking sustainable packaging solutions. Michelman has announced certification of three PFAS-free coatings—Michem® Coat 2000, Michem® Coat 525, and Hydraban® 8000—for compostable packaging applications. The products have recently met specifications established by American Society for Testing and Materials standards ASTM D6400 and D6868 under the certification program of the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) for compostable products. Rick Michelman, Vice President and Technology Director for the Americas Printing and Packaging division, stated: "As a supplier, we want to help brand owners and other members of the packaging supply chain transition the industry to more sustainable packaging. BPI operates the largest certification program for compostable products and packaging in North America, and obtaining BPI certification means the industry can trust that our products have passed a rigorous testing process." The products underwent biodegradation and ecotoxicity testing to obtain BPI certification. These tests confirm that Michelman's BPI-certified coatings biodegrade in industrial composting environments and can be used in typical application quantities for systems designed with minimal restrictions. Michem® Coat 2000 and Michem® Coat 525, newly developed functional coatings, provide maximum grease and oil performance in fiber-based food service applications. Hydraban® 8000 is a water-resistant paper coating for food packaging with excellent adhesion and printability. Michelman added: "We design solutions with the circular economy in mind and pay close attention to feedback from our converter customers and the brands they serve. Paper-based packaging materials coated with our functional coatings are typically recyclable and can be repulped. Our growing portfolio of certified compostable coatings now offers brand owners more sustainable options to achieve the performance they need and help keep packaging out of landfills."
