LANXESS and bp Announce Partnership

LANXESS and bp Join Forces Specialty chemicals company LANXESS and energy company bp are entering into a strategic partnership to use sustainable raw materials in high-tech plastics production. Starting in the fourth quarter of 2021, bp will supply sustainably produced cyclohexane to LANXESS's production facility in Antwerp, Belgium. The sustainable origin of raw materials is certified according to ISCC Plus rules ("International Sustainability and Carbon Certification"). Through this partnership, both companies, which already maintain a long-standing business relationship, aim to significantly advance sustainable plastics production. "The chemical industry plays an important role in expanding the circular economy and efficient sustainable management. To address the global challenges of climate change, we need creative approaches to solutions and collaboration in service to our customers. We are pleased to stand alongside LANXESS as a strong partner with a broad portfolio of raw materials derived from renewable sources," says Wolfgang Stückle, Vice President, bp Midstream Refining and Specialities Solutions Europe and Africa. bp uses bio-based and bio-circular feedstock to produce "green" cyclohexane. These can include, for example, rapeseed oil or biomass. "High-performance plastics, such as those used in various e-mobility applications, are solutions for many sustainable products. Making the production of this valuable material sustainable is now also important," says Marcel Beermann, Head of Global Supply and Logistics at LANXESS. "In this context, the use of bio-based raw materials alongside modern recycling processes is an important lever. We are very pleased to have bp at our side as a strategic partner," he adds. LANXESS uses cyclohexane primarily in the production of polyamide 6, a high-performance plastic used in the automotive industry as well as in electrical and consumer goods industries. Source
