Trusted Partner for the Pharmaceutical Industry and Fine Chemicals
A reliable partner for the pharmaceutical industry and fine chemistry
With a comprehensive range of services based on custom synthesis of special chemicals and intermediates, the clientele of Saltigo GmbH, a globally active subsidiary of specialty chemicals company LANXESS, includes pharmaceutical companies and fine chemicals buyers.
Saltigo Marketing and Sales Manager Dr. Christoph Schaffrath stated that there are good market opportunities ahead, particularly regarding precursors and intermediates for the pharmaceutical industry, where consistently high quality and reliable delivery are critical. Schaffrath explained: "For a long time, we have maintained ongoing business relationships with numerous pharmaceutical companies that value our reliability and expertise."

An example of such a precursor is 1,2,4-(1H)-triazole, which is not produced exclusively and is used to manufacture an antiviral active ingredient for oral application. 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole is also widely used in coupling reactions during the manufacturing process of pharmaceutical active ingredients.
Saltigo's core competencies in the custom synthesis field that attract significant customer interest include reactions such as hydrogenation and catalytic coupling under pressurized conditions and elevated temperatures. The service portfolio is complemented by process development, pilot tests, analytics and support for customers through registration of new substances.
Synthesis steps under clean room conditions, at low temperatures, with complex reagents or in an inert gas atmosphere are frequently encountered in active ingredient manufacturing processes and therefore play an important role in other areas as well. This enables the utilization of synergies in terms of expertise and related technologies.
For example, a current area of activity in fine chemistry at Saltigo is electrolytes for lithium ion batteries. Saltigo GmbH CEO Dr. Michael Zobel stated: "Thanks to our broad-based technological expertise, we are in an excellent position there as well."
Organic redox flow batteries may offer greater promise in the future once the technology is market-ready. This requires redox-active electrolyte systems.
Schaffrath explained: "In this context, various substances are currently being tested for their suitability and we can envision supporting suitable manufacturers from scaling up laboratory arrangements, through production for market launch and beyond."
