Henkel Introduces Cold Repair Technology

Henkel has introduced Teroson EP 5020 TR, a two-component epoxy-based cold repair (rebuilding) material designed to replace conventional tin soldering in post-sale repairs of automotive body damage. The new material eliminates the heat and open-flame processes required for tin-soldered repairs, offering fast curing, easy sanding and smoother application compared to earlier solutions. Although the automotive industry continues to develop new body materials, compatible post-sale repair technology is needed that does not affect adjacent plastic components, paint or existing corrosion protection. Henkel anticipated this challenge and developed Teroson EP 5020 TR. The new epoxy formulation can be applied at room temperature in a smooth, flameless and solder-free process. Henkel Regional Technology / Segment Engineer Joern Senftleben said: "Our new two-component Teroson EP 5020 TR product, as a cold rebuilding solution to replace conventional hot tin soldering, saves time and labor in post-sale body repairs and is also safer to work with" and added "Moreover, as a completely tin-free and heavy-metal-free material, it is a more sustainable alternative."

Teroson EP 5020 TR is supplied in manual cartridge guns with a special mixing nozzle for ease of application. It can be used on all metal surfaces, including modern steel alloys and aluminum, as well as for body repairs on all types of vehicles, including trucks.

Unlike tin soldering and open-flame processes, no high temperatures or naked flames are involved, meaning plastic components near the body parts to be repaired do not need to be removed and reinstalled to avoid damage. Thanks to its excellent properties, Teroson EP 5020 TR is also ideal for repairs in harder-to-reach areas. The cold rebuilding and flameless process ensures that paint and protective corrosion coating around the repair area remain undamaged. The material has an open time of approximately 10 minutes, giving the body specialist sufficient time to restore the part's original contours. Additionally, application and sanding of this new material is easier than Henkel's previous product version, resulting in a smooth substrate for subsequent filling and painting.

Teroson EP 5020 TR is now available across Western Europe in 50 ml two-component cartridges for efficient application with standard cartridge guns. It will be supplied with a static mixer to ensure a homogeneous compound. The 175 ml version will be launched by year-end.
