Henkel has established a state-of-the-art test facility for composites in Japan. The new Composite Laboratory in Isogo-ku, Yokohama, will enable automotive customers across Asia to work with Henkel experts to develop, test and bring composite parts to market readiness by establishing optimal process conditions. The proportion of composite materials is rapidly increasing among automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to reduce vehicle weight and improve performance. However, their requirements are stringent: they need cost-effective processes capable of producing over 10,000 parts annually. In practical terms, this often means the demand for specially formulated, fast-curing resins for use in these short production cycles. This underscores the importance of having in-house testing capabilities and reliable partners. Henkel, a world leader in composite matrix resins, adhesives, sealants and functional coatings for the automotive industry, has opened the new Composite Lab where automotive customers can develop and test composite parts with Henkel experts and optimize their production process conditions. As part of this, customers can run trials with different test tools on Henkel's own High Pressure Resin Transfer Molding (HP-RTM) equipment. The HP-RTM machine contains a 380-ton press for trials close to serial production conditions. Increased Global Development Activity Last year, Henkel also opened a Composite Lab in Europe, in Heidelberg, Germany. The new test centre in Asia reflects Henkel's commitment to serving its customers worldwide with a high level of service, quality, support and technical expertise.
Frank Kerstan, Global Program Manager for Automotive Composites, said: "We are proud of establishing this new, state-of-the-art test centre in Asia.
As global vehicle manufacturers seek to reduce weight in automobiles and trucks to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, the mindset that determines traditional material and process options must be set aside and new and emerging technologies must be considered. Both of our Composite Laboratories offer OEMs and Tier-One suppliers the opportunity to work with us on their timelines. In this way, they will first-hand learn about the options and opportunities of using advanced composite materials that enable short production cycles in their vehicles. Henkel seeks to create competitive advantage for its partners across the value chain. We will continue to work closely with our customers to develop cost-effective integrated solutions suitable for high-volume production. Henkel products provide comfort, power and safety while making vehicles quieter, lighter and more durable," he said. Henkel's composite portfolio includes a variety of composite matrix resins and adhesives. The Loctite MAX series of matrix resins are suitable for use with glass and carbon fiber preforms designed for the RTM process. The series also includes binders and release agents for fiber-reinforced components. Loctite composite adhesives are ideal for multi-material bonding and assembly. All these materials are backed by comprehensive process know-how and engineering expertise for the RTM process, as well as simulation and characterization of composite parts.
