Clariant and Polygal AG to expand natural rheology modifier options for Personal Care formulators
A step forward for natural skin care formulations: Clariant and Polygal AG have joined forces to expand access for Personal Care formulators to high-performance natural and readily biodegradable solutions for sensory and rheology modification.
The new partnership focuses on developing superior natural rheology modifiers to support brands in addressing consumer calls for skin care products with a smaller carbon footprint and good biodegradability.
Fabio Caravieri, Global Marketing Segment Leader, Clariant Personal Care, stated: "This new partnership will be an exciting force in enhancing natural cosmetic formulations. Renewable-based ingredients are key, but effectiveness is critical for their adoption. With Polygal, we look forward to challenging the common barriers standing in the way of formulating with natural products.
We are strengthening Clariant's natural product portfolio in the coming years with plant-based, readily biodegradable ingredients that combine excellent performance with superior sustainability. We want to equip formulators with both the inspiration and tools to make the transition from synthetic formulation staples to natural products an easier step to take."

Our comprehensive portfolio successfully supports customers in keeping pace with consumer trends. Thanks to our partnership with Clariant and their expertise in skin care formulations, we are very pleased to be able to help their teams discover and overcome the barriers to the use of renewable, biodegradable raw materials in cosmetics."
The new partnership has already responded to the first formulation challenge. Launching today, Clariant is expanding its Plantasens naturals portfolio with Plantasens Biogum Tara with compatible clean labels and addressing the need for a better-performing natural rheology modifier. Based on the food industry ingredient Tara Gum, the new 100 percent Renewable Carbon Index (RCI) and readily biodegradable rheology modifier succeeds in elevating the consistency and texture effect possibilities of natural skin care formulations.
It performs better than popular natural criteria by overcoming the traditional disadvantages of formulating with natural rheology modifiers thanks to its thickening power and light, fiber-free texture. Plantasens Biogum Tara avoids the low viscosity, tackiness and unpleasant feel typically associated with alternatives, delivering perfect appearance smoothness and a pleasant feel and application sensation for natural skin care creams, lotions and masks.
Plantasens Biogum Tara supports formulators not only in meeting the natural trend but also in doing more with less by reducing content. It has proven to thicken rapidly at significantly lower dosage concentrations than other natural rheology modifiers - up to 5 times higher viscosity at 1 percent usage level when directly compared to Xanthan Gum - without compromising formulation stability across a wide pH range.
Through formulation, final product performance and comprehensive clean label compliance, the natural rheology modifier Plantasens Biogum Tara offers a formulation support package for brands that are adopting conscious consumption and transitioning consumers to bio-based, lower carbon footprint, readily biodegradable products.
