Siemens: Europe's Patent Champion

Siemens ranked first among European companies in the European Patent Office's 2024 applicant rankings. Siemens accounts for 25 percent of all patent applications in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Siemens employees made approximately 24 inventions per day globally during the 2024 financial year, totaling 5,300 inventions.

Siemens ranked first among EU-based companies with 1,830 patent applications filed with the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2024. Samsung, Huawei and LG led the overall rankings. Among the top 10 companies are Siemens AG, BASF SE and Robert Bosch GmbH from Germany.

"Computer technology" ranked as the field with the highest number of patent applications at the EPO for the first time, and Siemens demonstrated its strength in this area. The company ranked 5th among the top 20 most active patent applicants in this technology field. Computer technology encompasses artificial intelligence technologies, particularly machine learning and pattern recognition, and Siemens is progressively expanding its active work in these areas. The share of patent applications in machine learning and artificial intelligence has approached 25 percent and recorded a 60 percent increase over the past five years. Strong research and development activities underscore Siemens' technological leadership in industrial artificial intelligence and software.

Siemens' total patent portfolio worldwide reached 41,700. During the 2024 financial year, Siemens employees filed approximately 5,300 invention disclosures globally. Based on 220 working days in the year, this translates to approximately 24 inventions per day. Siemens employs approximately 53,000 research and development personnel across 50 countries, with approximately 13,800 in Germany.
