2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Winners Announced The 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless. Nobel Prize in Chemistry winners for this year have been determined. The 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to American and Danish chemists Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless. The chemists were recognized with the prize for "the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry."
Carolyn R. Bertozzi
American chemist. She is known for her broad-ranging work spanning both chemistry and biology. She introduced the term "bioorthogonal chemistry" for chemical reactions compatible with living systems. Her recent efforts include the synthesis of chemical tools to examine glycans—sugars on cell surfaces—and how they affect diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and viral infections including COVID-19. She holds the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professorships in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. Bertozzi is also a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and former director of the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience research center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Morten Meldal
Meldal received his bachelor's and doctoral degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU); his doctoral work was supervised by Klaus Bock and focused on the synthetic chemistry of oligosaccharides. Between 1983 and 1988, he worked as an independent research fellow in organic chemistry at DTU and the University of Copenhagen. In 1985 and 1986, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge; he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Medical Research Council Centre, Laboratory of Molecular Biology. In 1996, he was appointed assistant professor at DTU. Since 1998, he has headed the synthesis group in the Chemistry Department of Carlsberg Laboratory and has served as director of the Centre for Solid Phase Organic Chemistry and Enzymatic Reactions (SPOCC) since 1997. Early in his career, Meldal developed various technological techniques and tools for peptide synthesis. He developed instrumentation for peptide and organic synthesis and multiple-column synthesis used to combine large split-mixture libraries. He first introduced alkynes and azides (cycloaddition) used in peptide and protein conjugations, polymers, and materials science. Meldal's group subsequently demonstrated that this reaction was completely orthogonal to most functional group chemistries. Later, they developed solid supports that facilitated the merger of solid-phase peptide and peptide organic chemistry with solid-phase chemical biology and protein chemistry. More recently, Meldal developed an optical encoding technique and focused on the merger of organic chemistry and peptide chemistry on solid supports. He has designed a series of new methods for the generation of N-acyl iminium ions, whose combinatorial libraries of compounds were synthesized and screened for active GPCR substances in cell-based bead screening.
K. Barry Sharpless
American chemist. He received his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1963 and completed his doctorate at Stanford University in 1968. After obtaining his doctorate, he continued his research at Stanford University and Harvard University. He received an honorary diploma from the Technical University of Munich. He served as professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. He currently serves as professor of chemistry at Scripps Research Institute. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001 for "his work on stereoselective oxidation reactions." He shared this prize with William S. Knowles and Ryoji Noyori, who were recognized "for their work on stereoselective hydrogenation reactions."
