2020 Automotive Trend Color: Sea Glass
The 2020 Global Automotive Color made a splash with Sea Glass. This new color trend is beginning to set direction for all vehicle types.
Inspired by rivers and oceans in nature, Axalta's Sea Glass color is a deep and intense shade that shimmers in sunlight, making it a color that meets consumer desires and will be noticed by drivers worldwide.
According to Axalta's 2019 Global Automotive Color Popularity Report, blue vehicles account for 7 percent of the global automotive market, with white, black, grey and silver making up 5 percent each.
Among regions with the highest share of blue vehicles, North America and Europe lead at 10 percent. Nancy Lockhart, Global Color Product Manager at Axalta, stated, "The trend toward turquoise blue is growing steadily. Sea Glass color has been designed for all vehicle types, from compact and sports cars to mid-size sedans, large SUVs and trucks."
Beyond being a trend, Sea Glass has been formulated to have reflective properties and is detectable by Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) systems.
Lockhart continued, "With its lustrous and pearlescent appearance, Sea Glass has been designed to be transmissible for Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) systems and meets the color trend requirements of today for autonomous vehicles of the future. The conductive properties of Axalta's Sea Glass color, like many other colors in our extensive palette, enable vehicle-to-vehicle detection."
Axalta's North America Color Marketing Manager Dan Benton stated, "Sea Glass color is now ready for market launch. The formulations developed for this versatile color are available in our global water-based technologies, and we are prepared for customers actively seeking the next color trend." Axalta's industry-leading brands, including Cromax, Standox and Spies Hecker, provide paint professionals with the opportunity to easily apply Sea Glass color in their next projects. Axalta is a leader in water-based products that offer easy application, exceptional adhesion and variable gloss levels, combined with good flexibility, low toxicity and flammability levels, making them fast-drying and thus an environmentally conscious choice for every business. Lockhart concluded, "Sea Glass reminds us of fresh water and ecology, and aligns well with our social responsibility platform toward the environment. Axalta employees remain motivated to help keep our waterways clean, reduce energy consumption and decrease water usage at our facilities worldwide." In connection with the publication of the 2020 Automotive Color of the Year report and CSR platform, Axalta will help remove more than 450 kilograms of waste from our oceans. Through the Bright Futures program, Axalta continues its commitment to environmental stewardship on a global scale. Through partnerships with Ducks Unlimited in North America and Ducks Unlimited in Mexico, it has helped protect over 13,000 acres of wetlands.
