Surrounded with the North Sea,
Germany, and Belgium, more than half of the Netherlands territories are below sea level. However, with it is high standards of living and well-educated population, it has one of the highest populations per square meter.
20% of the Netherlands territories are under sea level and 40% of the land is reclaimed from the sea. The highest point of the country is Vaalserberg Peak which is only 322.7 meters high. Thanks to modern practices, agriculture on reclaimed lands is very developed.
Such land reclaimed from the sea by human hand are called “polder”. While many vegetables are grown in greenhouses, other significant agricultural products are potatoes, sugar beet, and cereals.
Florist of Western Europe
The Netherlands does not use it is lands only for agriculture. It is very ambitious in gardening and growing flowers. In economic terms, the country gains considerable foreign currency from such sectors.
It is bestknown flower is the tulip. The story of how the Netherlands met with tulips is pretty interesting… Tulips are native to Central Asia but they were brought to the Netherlands in 1560’s by “Turks”.
One of the must-see sights in the Netherlands is Keukenhof Gardens (Flower Gardens of the Netherlands) that hosts almost 7 million tulip bulbs. Every year the country exports 80% of tulips it produces.
The World-famous Dutch cows are placed on the top in cattle farming. Thanks to highly productive cows and their tasteful milk, many different types of cheese are produced in the Netherlands.
The country has 30 milk factories covering 45% of global production and 150 milk powder factories with husbandry making up 2/3 of its total revenue.
Rotterdam: The World’s Biggest Port
Because of its geographical situation, the Netherlands is very suitable for sea travel. In addition, river lines and canals enable shipping up to 1000 tons.
In terms of cargo load, Europe’s biggest port is in Rotterdam. The members of European Economic Community (EEC) conduct 30% of their shipping from the Netherlands ports.
Low Levels of Raw Materials, High Employment
40% of all working population are employed at industry. This is a considerable rate given low levels of raw materials.
Since the country has more than 300 ports, shipbuilding is among significant sources of revenue. The country has around 450 factories that process and produce various chemicals.
Factories producing electronic instruments, aircraft and train factories and canned food factories thanks to the Netherlands being an agricultural country occupy prominent places in industry.
Among major export items of the Netherlands one can cite petroleum, electric instruments for wire telephonetelegram, data processing instruments and units, medicines put up in measured doses for therapeutic purposes, print machines, and medical, veterinary and dentistry tools and instruments.
It is major import items are petroleum, station wagons and automobiles.
Turkey - The Netherlands in Chemicals
According to data provided by IKMIB (Istanbul Chemicals and Chemical Products Exporters Association) regarding chemicals sector in June 2019, the highest level of export was made to the Netherlands.
At an export level of 110 million 663 thousand U.S. Dollars, the most exported items to the Netherlands in June were “mineral fuels, mineral oils and products”, “plastics and plastic products”, “inorganic chemicals”, “volatile oils, cosmetic products and soap”, “various chemical products”, and “rubber, rubber goods”. Six months of chemicals exportation to the Netherlands this year reached 417 million 758 thousand U.S. Dollars in value.

Commerce Between Turkey - The Netherlands
According to data provided by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT), in 2002-2018 period, direct international investment from Turkey to the Netherlands reached about 12 billion 581 U.S. Dollars. In terms of direct foreign investment made abroad from our country, the Netherlands occupies the top position.
There is a considerable number of companies established by Turks in the Netherlands. Around 23,000 such companies make a total of 6 billion Euro worth of investments, providing employment to 80,000 people and creating 8 billion Euros in terms of revenues.
Among the most prominent products exported to the Netherlands, one can include motor removal lorries, automobiles, station wagons, race cars, and textile products.
Imports from the Netherlands include iron and steel, scrap metals, tractors, alkyd resins, petroleum, bitumen mineral oils, and polyether.
