SABIC, SD & Linde enter strategic collaboration to explore opportunities for decarbonization in chemical industry.
SABIC, a prominent player in the global chemicals industry, Scientific Design (SD), a leading licensor in Ethylene Glycol Technology and an affiliate company, Linde Engineering, a subsidiary of Linde, a renowned global industrial gases and engineering company, have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding to explore collaborative opportunities for decarbonizing the SD Ethylene Glycol Process.
The primary objective of this collaboration is to devise innovative solutions that diminish the carbon footprint and achieve low-carbon emissions technology by integrating SABIC's inventive CO2 recovery and purification technology into SD licensed manufacturing glycol plants worldwide. The overarching goal is to establish sustainable production of Ethylene Oxide and Ethylene Glycol, thereby setting industry benchmarks for carbon-neutral practices.
Bob Maughon, Executive Vice President, Technology & Innovation, CTO & CSO at SABIC, underscored the company's commitment to carbon neutrality, emphasizing their strategic focus on advancing innovative technologies at scale.
Through a commitment to innovation and collaborative efforts, SABIC aims to develop new technologies and processes that contribute to carbon neutrality. The collaboration with Linde Engineering exemplifies the importance of leveraging technological expertise to convert waste products into valuable resources within the Circular Carbon Economy framework.

John van der Velden, Senior Vice President Global Sales & Technology at Linde Engineering, expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting the established history of cooperation between the two companies. The synergy between SABIC's SD gas processing technology and Linde's proficiency in capturing and liquefying CO2, along with their track record in designing and operating plants, aims to yield solutions supporting a carbon-neutral petrochemical industry.
Atieh Abu Raqabah, CEO of SD, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the groundbreaking journey with SABIC and Linde Engineering. The integration of SABIC’s CO2 Capture & Purification technology into EO/EG production processes aligns with their commitment to sustainability and positions SABIC Scientific Design as a leader in offering Zero Carbon Ready EO/EG Technology.
The collaboration will leverage SABIC's proprietary CO2 technology, proven effective in the world's largest
carbon capture and utilization (CCU) plant at SABIC affiliate, United. This technology can recover and purify up to 500,000 metric tons (MT) of CO2 per year, mitigating emissions during ethylene glycol production.
The captured CO2 can be converted into valuable products such as urea and methanol, contributing to agricultural enhancement and various chemical applications.
In 2021, SABIC announced its commitment to carbon neutrality, with interim targets including a 20% reduction in Scope 1&2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2018 and complete carbon neutrality by 2050 in alignment with the Paris Agreement. SABIC's carbon neutrality roadmap encompasses key pathways such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, electrification, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and green/blue hydrogen.
This strategic collaboration among SABIC, Scientific Design, and Linde Engineering represents a significant advancement in transforming the chemical industry, accelerating the transition to a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.
