Revolution Receives FDA Approval
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for Revolution's proprietary recycling process, allowing the production of post-consumer recycled, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE PCR) from recycled stretch film for food contact applications.
This approval signifies a significant milestone in Revolution's efforts to introduce recycled material innovations into the food packaging industry. Revolution's clear PCR, developed through its Sustainable Loop™ mechanical recycling method, can be utilized at recycled content levels of up to 100% in the manufacturing of food contact items.
These items encompass a wide range of food categories, including dry and wet, raw and processed foods (such as fats, oil, dairy, beverages, aqueous products, and various dry solids) suitable for hot/boiling, frozen, refrigerated, and room temperature conditions of use. Notably, this approval represents the broadest Conditions of Use (COU) in the industry for LLDPE PCR.
This achievement underscores Revolution's commitment to sustainable practices in the food packaging sector. Both clear and white LLDPE PCR, processed using Revolution's circular approach, provide converters and brands with a viable recycled resin option for flexible film food packaging applications like stand-up pouches and frozen food bags.
As the demand for sustainability rises among consumers, brands, and retailers, this breakthrough in sustainable plastic solutions aligns with goals outlined by initiatives like the U.S. Plastics Pact and its Roadmap to 2025.
Revolution, a founding activator of the U.S. Plastics Pact, shares the vision of ensuring that 100% of plastic
packaging will be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025. The FDA's approval for both clear and white LLDPE PCR resins holds the potential to play a key role in helping partners achieve the Pact's objectives.
Revolution's CEO, Sean Whiteley, expressed pride in the high-quality standards maintained by the company, emphasizing their commitment to promoting mechanically recycled materials as a sustainable solution for the food packaging industry and beyond.
Additionally, Revolution recently collaborated with Charter Next Generation® (CNG), a leading producer of specialty films for flexible packaging and other markets, to integrate food grade LLDPE PCR into their product portfolio.
Industry leaders like Pregis, Berry Global, and SEE (formerly Sealed Air) also incorporate Revolution's line of PCR resins in their flexible film products. The introduction of clear food grade LLDPE PCR further expands options for innovative recycled packaging solutions in the market. [Source: PR Newswire]
