When it comes to the efficient management of water distribution networks, the flow rate of water supplied is a crucial factor. A high degree of transparency over the total amount of stored and consumed water quantities can be established by bidirectional flow measurement and metering. Highly accurate district metering using electromagnetic water meters provide water utilities with all information necessary to precisely monitor the water intake and water release of the water supply system.

Those measuring points are often located in difficult to access areas like manholes. As a rule, these locations – even if power is supplied in most cases – are far away from any control room. In order to be able to collect and process the measurement data centrally, the values must be collected from partly remote and far-flung measuring points.

For remote monitoring and process control of drinking water networks, Krohne offers a tailored measurement solution including high accuracy flow measurement and GPRS communication. The solution offers wireless transmission of analogue or digital outputs on flow, conductivity, pressure and temperature via a mobile network based control station. For safe transmission of data an ODP protocol is used (transmission with time stamp). Integration of the protocol into the control or visualisation system is done via OPC DA.
