Avient introduces next-generation solutions to make it easier to use recycled plastics in packaging applications.
Avient Corporation, a leading provider of specialized and sustainable material solutions and services, today launched its groundbreaking PCR Color Prediction Service for polyolefins and polyethylene terephthalate (
PET) resins, as well as CesaTMNox A4R Additives for Recycling.
These sustainability solutions are specifically designed to enhance the customer experience when working with post-consumer recycled (PCR) content for packaging materials. Both are consistent with the eight ways Avient assists customers in becoming more sustainable.
“Avient is fully committed to increasing opportunities to expand the use of recycled polymers, addressing any barriers that arise either during the recycling process or when customers want to incorporate PCR content into existing or new applications,” said Norbert Merklein, vice president and general manager for the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions of Color, Additives and Inks at Avient.
"Our CesaNox A4R Additives for Recycling, together with the PCR Color Prediction Service, help overcome these roadblocks. These are two new ways Avient is contributing to the circular economy and empowering customers to meet their sustainability goals."
Calculating the Color Gamut
The PCR Color Prediction Service assists brand owners in determining which colors are possible based on the amount of PCR used. It employs sophisticated technology to determine whether colors are feasible in a new application that incorporates PCR content via prior color matching.
This internally developed solution, the first of its kind for the plastics industry, also calculates how much PCR content can be added to an existing application without affecting its signature color.
Avient experts use proprietary software to measure resin characteristics in order to identify the range of colors that can be successfully reproduced in a specific PCR-based material. This premium service simplifies and expedites the selection of preferred colors for polymers containing PCR, avoiding time-consuming trial and error.
The service provides greater flexibility to customers who may need to switch from one PCR content source to another by speeding up the evaluation process, which is especially important given today's supply variability.
Increasing the Stability of PCR Content
The new CesaNox A4R Additives for Recycling from Avient are based on a unique formulation that protects post-consumer polyolefins from oxidation, which can cause defects such as black spots, gels, and discoloration.
The antioxidant can be added early in the recycling process to PCR content or incorporated into virgin resin to prepare it for future recycling.
CesaNox A4R Additives for Recycling are extremely cost-effective. They use a let-down ratio that is half that of standard antioxidants. Packaging, automotive parts, and consumer goods are among the applications for polyolefins stabilized with this additive.
