Kimpur Produced Polyester from PET Bottle Wastes Kimpur, Turkey's 100% domestic polyurethane systems producer, keeps on taking new steps to create a sustainable future. The chemical industry company is proud to have created one of the best examples of environmentally friendly product ranges in its industry. The company was able to obtain roughly 20% of the polyester polyol used in the production of slippers from PET waste and roughly 17% from bio-based raw materials.  The innovative innovation, which launched on September 20 at the SIMAC TANNING TECH being hosted in Italy, lead the industry by making it possible to produce slippers with the first elastic structure made from PET waste.  Tons of plastic that is collected and recycled eliminates 41 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions, saves 66% of raw materials, and 80% of energy with 5 thousand 774 kilowatts, according to data from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change for 2021. With its project, which was industrially tested in the production of slippers, Kimpur, one of the largest exporters of polyurethane system houses, synthesized polyester polyol from PET bottle waste based on these significant data for sustainability and nature protection. The resultant product is superior to current standard systems in terms of both its physical and mechanical properties. In 2021, Kimpur implemented 'Polyester Polyol Synthesis from PET Bottle Wastes and Commercial Use in Polyurethane Systems' project, which was awarded at the 10th R&D Project Market organized by the Istanbul Chemicals and Chemical Products Exporters' Association (İKMİB), and thus took a pioneering step towards the production of a sustainable and recycling-oriented product. "We carry on our R&D efforts that significantly contribute to efficiency and savings"
In 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Technology registered Kimpur R&D Center, and according to Kimpur R&D Director Dr. Yener Rakıcıoğlu, they are happy to lead the industry by providing exceptional solutions to develop projects that are beneficial to the environment and society:  "As Turkey's  %100 domestic polyurethane systems manufacturer, we carry on our R&D studies that significantly contribute to efficiency and savings in the life cycle of our products. In accordance with the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement to fight against global warming and climate change, with the investments we have made with the encouragement of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), we completely remove from our products the inflator gases that damage the ozone layer and use more environmentally friendly inflator gases. We continue working on biobased projects. In 2021, we started using biobased raw materials in our footwear product group and in our rigid foam systems product group used in sandwich panel production. And this year, we managed to synthesize polyester polyol from PET bottle waste to produce a final product that does not compromise on its physical and mechanical properties and provides a cost advantage compared to the standard systems available. We are breaking new ground in the industry with the elastic structure of the product we have obtained, and we are happy to have taken a pioneering step in our sector with this product. We launched our environmentally friendly product at the SIMAC TANNING TECH in Italy on September 20 and received a great deal of interest. With our investments, we will keep on contributing to the sustainable transformation of industry and economy." Polyester from PET Bottle Wastes
The capacity of the recycling plant is 5000 tons
Aiming to significantly increase the commercial use of its environmentally friendly product in the 5000 tons capacity recycling facility for PET waste that will be commissioned in its second production facility in Düzce, Kimpur focuses on recycling in its new production facility in Düzce within the scope of its sustainability goals, and aims to meet approximately 55 percent of its total electricity consumption with this investment, as well as reducing approximately 679 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Kimpur, which continues to add new projects to its mission to leave a habitable world for future generations with its sustainability efforts, saved 7.06% in energy in 2021 according to its sustainability report. The company, which has taken an important step for the required transformations in industrial production required by the EU Green Deal, which has the potential to affect almost everything from industry to exports, from access to finance to the functioning of the economy, will obtain approximately 20 percent of the energy required for production from clean energy with the solar power plant installed in the factory building in Gebze.
