  • 11.10.2023
Novozymes was honored as a 2023 Safer Choice® Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of its exceptional contributions to producing ingredients that promote safety for families, pets, workplaces, communities, and the environment. Novozymes was one of the 30 Safer Choice Partner of the Year award winners announced by the EPA that year. The Safer Choice program assists consumers and facility managers, including those in schools and office buildings, in finding products that not only perform well but also prioritize human health and environmental safety. Novozymes earned this accolade due to its innovative approach in creating enzymes for inclusion in safer detergents and for actively promoting the use of Safer Choice ingredients through awareness campaigns. Arnaud Melin, Vice President of Consumer Biosolutions, Americas, at Novozymes, expressed their pride in receiving the Safer Choice Partner recognition. He emphasized Novozymes' commitment to developing top-notch enzymes for household care products that are both safe for families and environmentally friendly. Novozymes is dedicated to pioneering biological detergents without compromising on washing performance and affordability. The company is expanding its product range to support industry partners in launching consumer products approved by the U.S. EPA Safer Choice program. Novozymes Becomes EPA Safe Choice Partner In 2023, Novozymes introduced two powerful enzymatic blends under the Novozymes Medley® brand, both meeting Safer Choice criteria. This Medley® portfolio streamlines the offerings of detergent manufacturers, reducing packaging and shipping costs and thereby decreasing their carbon footprint. Furthermore, Novozymes is actively working to reduce carbon emissions in alignment with the EPA's climate change goals. The company achieved a 63% reduction in CO2 emissions from its operations compared to a 2018 baseline. Moreover, 82% of its electricity was sourced from renewable sources. Novozymes is also taking substantial measures to minimize carbon emissions across its entire supply chain, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050. Notably, its net-zero targets spanning scopes 1, 2, and 3 have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, making Novozymes one of the pioneering companies in this regard. Melin emphasized Novozymes' dedication to finding biological solutions for a better world and not just within its product range but also through education and empowerment initiatives. The company aims to reduce the cleaning industry's reliance on fossil-fuel-based surfactants and non-renewable chemistries while meeting consumer expectations regarding cleaning performance and affordability. To earn the Safer Choice label, a product must meet the EPA's stringent Safer Choice Standard, ensuring rigorous criteria for both human and environmental health. The Safer Choice program collaborates with approximately 350 formulator-manufacturer partners, resulting in nearly 2,000 Safer Choice-certified products available for both consumers and commercial buyers.
