Massive Increase in pH Sensor Lifetime

Massive Increase in pH Sensor Lifetime
  • 02.12.2022
Massive Increase in pH Sensor Lifetime and Greater Process Efficiency Harsh process conditions at a chemical facility meant pH sensors survived for only four weeks. Now, robust sensors with intelligent diagnostics have a lifetime of a year or more. In addition, measurement point management is far less frequent, and far more efficient.
Global Speciality Chemical Producer
One of the world’s leading speciality chemical companies operates a facility in Germany where it produces silanes, fillers, matting agents, bleaching and oxidizing agents, and detergent raw materials. In several of the site’s units, hydrochloric acid recovery and off-gas purification require tight control of pH to ensure process efficiency. To maintain reliable pH measurements at all times, many of the measurement points feature two redundant pH sensors.
Process Conditions Lead to Very Short Sensor Lifetime
Due to harsh conditions, the pH sensors installed in these processes had a lifetime of only four weeks; and because the sensors were analog and therefore had to be calibrated at the measurement point, sensor maintenance was frequent and time consuming. The combination of short sensor life and high maintenance meant costs for running these measurements was excessive. Electronic engineers at the plant asked Mettler Toledo if we could offer a more robust solution that would require less maintenance. We were happy to provide a test system that would meet and surpass requirements. pH Sensörü
Exceptional Sensor Lifetime
After a month of testing, the electronic engineers at the facility were highly satisfied with the stability of the Mettler Toledo sensors. Further, the ISM diagnostics told the engineers how well the probes were tolerating the processes
Low Measurement Point Running Costs
The facility purchased 33 Mettler Toledo pH measurement systems for hydrochloric acid recovery and offgas purification. Long sensor life combined with the benefits of ISM now mean these processes are running far more efficiently, and at a significantly lower cost.
