Latest Technologies in Paint&Coating Sector

  • 27.03.2020
Today, the terms “sustainability”, “innovation”, “efficiency” and “quality” shape the paint & coating sector as for all sectors, and new technologies are emerging day by day both in the selection of raw materials and in the production processes. By a general classification; (I) “construction paints” containing interior and exterior paints, (II) “furniture and wood paints”, (III) “automotive paints”, (IV) airspace, marine, military and general industrial applications, including “industrial paints” and protective paints” and (V)” printing inks” constitute the five basic groups of the paint industry. In recent years, the main approach for all these groups focuses on the production of high performance, environmentally friendly and economical paint system, and all new technological developments include the production of new types of resins, additives and pigments. The systems, where new technological developments are frequently experienced and which are very popular in recent years, are summarized below. paint industry Systems that can be grouped under the main class of “Smart paints&coatings” are following; self-cleaning paint systems; photocatalytic systems; photovoltaic systems; breathable systems due to their water-repellent feature and high water vapor permeability; systems that allow of cleaning of stains due to its high oil repellent feature; air cleaning paint systems; antibacterial systems that prevent mold / fungus growth; color changing systems with temperature, light or pressure change and self-healing systems. Systems that can be grouped under the main class of “Hybrid paints&coatings” are following; hybrid paint/coating systems where superior performance is obtained by combining the superior features of two or more different systems based on organic and inorganic; polyurea, polysiloxane and fluoropolymerbased hybrid coatings. Systems that can be grouped under the main class of “High performance paints&coatings” are following; 100% solid content elastomeric polyurethane systems; high solid content epoxy systems; epoxy, polyurethane etc. powder paints; silicone resin based high temperature and fire resistant paints and fire retardant (include intumescent) paints; UV absorber paint systems especially used in military applications; protective coatings with high corrosion resistance. “Green Chemistry” approach, which includes all the alternatives that cause less harm to living things, the atmosphere and the environment and systems, is also very popular in paint industry. “Green paints&coatings”, which are produced in accordance with international environmental regulations, include, “low carbon footprint systems”, “low VOC (volatile organic compound) systems” and “high solids systems”. latest techologies in paint&coating sector doç. dr. serkan emik Doç.
